Southend sack groundsman
... as match against Bolton was called off due to frozen pitch .

So is the same going to happen to Leyton Orient and Charlton's ?

Seems harsh ... and cold !

Charlton's was the clubs fault, as the tight cunts refused to turn the under soil heating on.

Charlton were too busy complaining about ours being paid for by the GREAT BRITISH TAXPAYER that in their rage they forgot to turn their own on....

They've added it to their list of grievences against us, the government, the LLDC or whatever they are called now and the world in general.

Charlton have a lot of players out injured, apparently.

SUFC MATE reckons he did not put covers and blowers on... plenty of local football played on Saturday round here would have probably done enough to get the game on... cost the club £60k app'

I remember a West Ham v Chelsea match getting called off back in the early 00s may be late Dec 2000 or early Jan 2001. We eventually played the game in March one evening when we had hardly anyone fit as we had the fa cup game v Spurs on the weekend so held players back for that. Might as well have just given Chelsea the points, we lost 2-0 and were never in it. I remember the postponed game though as my mates missus dropped us off near the Supporters club and we managed to catch her when we realized the game was off. She dropped us off down a pub in Romford and went shopping so we made the most of it. My mate was Chelsea and we used to go home and away with each other to the games when we played each other. Always a few beers and then trying to keep quiet when your team scored and you we in the wrong end. Not always easy. Anyway, he was most annoyed that we didn't have under soil heating. I think I was on my fifth beer before I had the guts to tell him we did have it and I couldn't explain why it wasn't on. Don't think I ever found out, heard a load of rumours about someone forgot or the timer broke or whatever. All a bit embarrassing.

Yeah remember it Jon.. around Christmas time... we had been having a beer in basildon and a mate drove... we kind of worked it out when we saw loads walking the opposite way down Barking Rd

Re: Southend sack groundsman
Jon, that might have been the match where they did switch on the under soil heating. It thawed the pitch nicely, but is was a little "baked". They put the sprinklers on (rumour has it) to soften the pitch, which it did. Then the temperature fell and it froze again, to late for the under soil heaters to work again.

Gillingham's game tomorrow just called off for the same reason I bet the groundsman is shitting himself ;-)

Re: Southend sack groundsman
We were in the Wakefield when it was announced that Chelsea match was postponed.
Apparently the undersoil heating had broken in one corner of the pitch, so the referee called it off.

The fucking annoying thing was, Chelsea hadn't won away all season and we were on a good run of form. Obviously things had changed when we got to the re-arranged match.

Groundsman should have been warned that he was skating on thin ice!

I remember a boxing day game (Coventry I think) where it got cancelled very late. We were almost at the ground in the car and just turned back and went went to the pub. It was freezing bloody cold when the game finally got played too.

They just survived a winding-up order by paying a tax bill at the last minute

Seems a bit strange sacking an employee of 27 years a couple of days afterwards

I smell a rotten kipper...
